Opportunity

With no state-specific insights on how Oregonians perceive medical errors or how these experiences shape their views of the healthcare system, OPSC sought to fill this gap by commissioning a comprehensive, demographically representative survey to inform its ongoing work of cultivating a more trusted healthcare system.

Approach

In March 2025, DHM conducted a bilingual survey of 1,041 Oregon residents, including 382 individuals who had experienced a medical error in their own care or in the care of someone close to them. The questions posed explored perceptions of healthcare quality, confidence in providers, the emotional and physical impacts of medical errors, and expectations for provider transparency.

Results

The data we collected is a first of its kind for OPSC and will support their ongoing efforts to facilitate constructive conversations with healthcare facilities, providers, and patients. Understanding the human impact of medical errors in Oregon is an important step toward OPSC’s ultimate goal of enabling providers to learn from their errors and make care safer moving forward.
